Process

The Aguas Blancas plant, in continuous operation since 2000, is located approximately 6 km from the mining areas and has been designed to produce iodine from caliche. The general process consists of caliche open pit mining, heap leaching (transitioning to full-agitated leach plant), chemical concentration, electrochemical reduction, and crystallization - fusion. The average overall recovery from heap to finished product has been about 56%. The finished product is +99.9% Iodine in a solid crystalline form (prills) and is sold in 50 kg drums.
